Engelberg, Switzerland

Engelberg is located in the Oberwalden canton of central Switzerland. It's approximately 2 1/2 hours south of Zurich by train. Here's a map showing where it's located:

The town is located at an altitude of 1,000 meters, or 3,300 feet. It's at the bottom of a former glacial valley that was carved out millions of years ago. The town is active year-round, with summer activities like mountain biking, golf, bungy jumping and hiking. A Benedictine monastery was founded there in 1120, and is one of only five in Switzerland. Everywhere you look, you're surrounded by mountains.

Here are three pictures of the area from the Titlis ski lift. The town is centralized and easy to walk around. I took these pictures earlier that week, and there wasn't much snow on the ground.

The monastery is the big building complex on the right side of this picture:

This was taken on my last day. Notice the large snow bank on the left. Remember, there was no snow at this point just 3 days earlier.

This was the most beautiful building in downtown, and is currently used for various businesses. It was across the street from the train station.

While I was traveling to Luzern on the train, you could see the snowline as we were moving down from the higher elevations. This was the best picture I had showing the snowline.
